Weekly Focus: Emotional Safety

August 14, 20261 min read

Being able to talk openly with your partner is important, but just as important is knowing that it's safe to do so.

Emotional safety means creating a relationship where both people can share their thoughts, feelings, concerns, and even disagreements without fear of being ridiculed, dismissed, or punished for being honest.

That doesn't mean you'll always agree. In fact, healthy couples will disagree. But there's a difference between disagreement and making your partner feel like they can't safely speak their mind.

Sometimes emotional safety looks like listening without immediately defending yourself. Sometimes it's responding with curiosity instead of criticism, and sometimes it's simply saying, "Thank you for telling me."

The goal isn't to create a relationship where nothing difficult is ever said. It's to create one where both people know they can say what needs to be said and still be loved and respected.

PAUSE & CONSIDER

Emotional safety isn't about never being uncomfortable. It's about knowing that even when a conversation is uncomfortable, your relationship is still a safe place to be honest.

💬 2 QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER

What helps you feel safe enough to be completely honest with me, especially when something is difficult to say?

Is there anything I could do differently to make it easier for you to share your thoughts or feelings with me?
